Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages
Expanded polystyrene granules boast four key strengths: their closed-cell structure delivers excellent buffering, protecting fragile goods like electronics during transit. The trapped air also ensures outstanding thermal and sound insulation, making them ideal for construction insulation boards and cold-chain containers. They are ultra-light (density: 0.015–0.03 g/cm³) and cost-effective, thanks to cheap raw materials and mature production processes. Additionally, they are highly processable, easily molded into custom shapes via steam heating, and resist weak acids and bases.

Drawbacks
Poor heat resistance (distorting above 70℃) limits high-temperature use. Its porous structure causes low mechanical strength and brittleness, ruling out load-bearing applications. Traditional EPS is non-degradable, posing severe white pollution risks despite recycling efforts. Moreover, it is incompatible with organic solvents like gasoline and acetone, further narrowing its application scope.

Applications

EPS granules, valued for being lightweight, shock-absorbent, heat-insulating, soundproof and easily moldable, serve multiple industries. In packaging, they are made into custom foam liners for fragile items like electronics and glassware, and used as express package fillings to reduce transit damage. In construction, they form insulation boards for walls/ roofs/ floors, decorative lines and lightweight partition cores, cutting energy use and structural load. For cold chain and daily necessities, they become insulated boxes for fresh produce/ vaccines and disposable food containers/ trays. In cultural sectors, they are crafted into sculptures, 3D puzzles and cartoon ornaments. Industrially, they insulate equipment/ pipelines and act as bumper buffers for low-speed vehicles.
