Terluran® GP-22 has a pedigree that most buyers in the plastics industry know well-it started life as a BASF Terluran® grade. Back in the late '90s, this was the workhorse ABS out of Europe, earning its stripes by balancing high gloss, solid impact strength, and easy processing. It quickly became the default choice for everything from appliance housings to automotive interior trim.

In 2011, BASF and INEOS formed a 50/50 joint venture called Styrolution. A few years later, INEOS bought out the business entirely, rebranding it as INEOS Styrolution. Crucially, the GP22 formula, production lines, and technical archives moved across intact. So, while the bags today say INEOS Styrolution, the material inside is still that same proven German formulation refined over three decades. That's why you'll still hear old-school engineers call it "BASF GP22"-the name changed, but the recipe didn't.

The Takeaway: An MFR of 19 hits a sweet spot-easy to fill yet dense enough to avoid sink marks. The impact strength (26 kJ/m² at 23°C) means parts won't shatter if dropped. With a Vicat of 96°C, it handles the heat from electronics without warping. And that very white base? It's a cost-saver; you need less pigment or white masterbatch compared to off-white competitors.

Where Does GP22 Fit Best?

Think of GP22 as the specialist for housings and covers. It dominates these applications:

Appliances:

Washing machine control panels, fridge liners, AC vents, coffee machines, vacuum cleaners, and robot vacuums.

Consumer Electronics: Monitor/TV rear covers, printer housings, routers, adapters, and keyboard/mouse shells.

Automotive: Dashboard trim, center console panels, door skins, mirror housings, and chrome-platable parts (grilles, emblems, bright trim).

Toys & Lifestyle: High-gloss building blocks, cosmetic cases, bathroom accessories, and luggage shells.

Industrial: Instrument enclosures, toolboxes, and equipment guards.

Not recommended for:

Prolonged outdoor exposure (unless UV-stabilized grades are used), highly corrosive chemical environments, or ultra-thin walls (<1mm). For thin-wall molding, look at GP35.

GP-22 Injection Molding Guidelines

1. Drying (Non-negotiable)

Don't skip this. Even slight moisture ruins high-gloss surfaces with silver streaks.

Temp: 80–85°C Time: 2–4 hours Target: Moisture < 0.1%

Storage: Keep in sealed PE bags; don't leave them sitting outside.

2. Barrel Temperatures

Melt Temp: 220–260°C (230–250°C is the sweet spot)

Nozzle: 210–240°C

Warning: Never exceed 270°C for extended periods. The rubber phase degrades, causing yellowing and a massive drop in impact strength.

3. Mold Temperature

Standard Parts: 30–60°C

High-Gloss Parts: 60–80°C. This helps the melt "kiss" the mold surface, eliminating flow lines.

Too cold: Poor filling, visible weld lines, high stress.

Too hot: Longer cycles, sticking issues.

4. Injection & Holding

Injection Pressure: 70–120 MPa (up to 150 MPa for tricky, thin parts)

Holding Pressure: 30–60 MPa (roughly 40–60% of injection pressure)

Speed: Medium to high; use multi-stage injection for complex geometries to prevent shear burn.

Screw Speed: 30–60 rpm

5. Tooling Design

Gates: Direct, fan, or pin gates work best. Narrow gates cause jetting or burning.

Shrinkage: 0.4–0.7%. Design your mold accordingly.

Draft Angles: 0.5–1° for smooth surfaces; 1°+ for textured surfaces.

Troubleshooting & Practical Tips

Solving Real-World Production Headaches

Issue / Defect

Possible Cause(s)

Recommended Solution(s)

Silver streaks / splay

• Material not dried sufficiently
• Excess moisture in hopper

• Dry at 80–85°C for 2–4 h, keep moisture < 0.1%
• Use dehumidifying dryer, seal bags after opening

Bubbles / voids inside part

• Trapped moisture or air
• Insufficient packing / hold pressure

• Verify drying conditions
• Increase hold pressure & time, check venting

Poor surface gloss / dull patches

• Low mold temperature
• Uneven mold heating
• Short hold time

• Raise mold temp to 60–80°C for glossy parts
• Balance mold heating channels, extend hold

Visible weld / meld lines

• Low melt / mold temperature
• Poor gate location or inadequate venting

• Increase melt temp (within 220–260°C)
• Raise mold temp, optimize gate position, add vents

Flow marks / hesitation lines

• Too-low injection speed
• Cold mold surface

• Increase injection speed moderately
• Raise mold & melt temperature

Warping / distortion

• Uneven cooling
• Excessive hold pressure
• High internal stress

• Improve cooling uniformity
• Reduce hold pressure/time, anneal part (80°C, 1–2 h)

Yellowing / black specks

• Melt temperature too high (>270°C)
• Long residence time in barrel

• Keep melt ≤ 260°C, purge with PP if stopping >30 min
• Clean screw/barrel regularly

Brittle parts / poor impact

• Overheating degrading butadiene phase
• High internal stress
• Excess regrind

• Control melt temp, avoid long dwell
• Anneal parts, limit regrind to ≤15%

Plating adhesion failure

• High molded-in stress
• Contamination on surface

• Optimize process to minimize stress (lower injection speed, proper packing)
• Anneal before plating, ensure clean surface

Sticking to mold / difficult ejection

• Mold temperature too high
• Insufficient draft angle
• Over-packing

• Lower mold temp slightly, increase draft (≥0.5–1°)
• Reduce hold pressure, check ejector balance

Cutting Pigment Costs: GP22's ultra-white base requires significantly less white masterbatch than standard ABS (often 5–10% less). Over thousands of shots, that's real money back in your pocket.

Boosting Yield on Cosmetic Parts: Its balanced flow prevents flow marks on large, flat surfaces like monitor backs or appliance lids.

Downgauging from PC/ABS: If your application doesn't need extreme heat resistance, switching from PC/ABS to GP-22 can slash raw material costs by 15–20% while maintaining that high-gloss finish.

Batch Consistency: If you supply to OEMs or export, the last thing you need is a bad batch. INEOS Styrolution's global TDS ensures lot-to-lot consistency that generic brands simply can't match.

Sustainability Goals: Need recycled content? Check out Terluran® ECO GP-22 MR50/MR70. It contains 50% or 70% post-consumer recycled (WEEE) content with properties nearly identical to virgin GP-22.

Final Thoughts

Terluran® GP-22 isn't a flashy "new" material-it's a veteran. It's the definition of a reliable "middle-of-the-road" performer that just works, shift after shift. For procurement managers and process engineers, that reliability is priceless.

For the Chinese market, note that GP-22 is also produced at the Ningbo Yongxing facility. You might see it listed locally as TDC GP-22 or GP-22 TDC. Regardless of the label, if you need a high-gloss, tough, and process-stable ABS for high-volume production, this is likely your best bet.

If you're struggling with sink marks, flow lines, or high scrap rates on a current project, send over your part specs (wall thickness, dimensions, aesthetic requirements). We can help verify if GP-22 is the optimal solution or suggest a better alternative.

Buying Tip: Always request the official INEOS Styrolution TDS and COA for Terluran® GP-22.
